During my time in Papua New Guinea, I had the privilege of working closely with UN Women and UNDP, collaborating on the production of documentaries that aimed to amplify the impact of UN programs. Among my documentary projects are the following:

A New Dawn – Women striving for equality in decision making in PNG

This short documentary shed light on the experiences of female candidates following the 2012 national elections in Papua New Guinea. Developed in partnership with the Office for Development of Women, UNDP, and with the support of the University of Papua New Guinea – School of Humanities and Political Science. The filming process involved reviewing women’s participation in the 2012 election and collecting evidence to inform future strategies and approaches.

My tasks throughout the project included:

  • Developed a comprehensive proposal for the documentary, including details such as the filming schedule, budget, locations, and desired participants for interviews.
  • Created an outline for the documentary, structuring it in a way that aligned with the project’s objectives.
  • Drafted interview questions and worked alongside UN staff to review and refine them as needed.
  • Coordinated international and domestic travel arrangements for myself and the rest of the crew in collaboration with the In-Country office in Papua New Guinea.
  • Filmed the post-election diagnostic workshop of the 2012 National Elections in mid-October 2012.
  • Filmed and conducted interviews with election candidates and Members of Parliament, capturing their perspectives and insights.
  • Coordinated with news outlets to acquire and utilise archival footage of previous elections for incorporation into the documentary.
  • Conducted research and gathered additional digital assets such as newspaper articles and electoral promotional materials to enrich the documentary.
  • Develop concept design for the motion graphics.
  • Edited the documentary under the guidance of the “Equality and participation in public decision making in PNG – The experience of women candidates in the 2012 elections” report, along with other concept notes and reports related to election diagnostics.
  • Collaborated closely with UN staff throughout the documentary production process.
  • Generated progress reports detailing the work undertaken and submitted them to UN Women for their review.
  • Designed and authored the DVDs with the final documentary and produced a more than 100 copies for their distribution to partner and funding agencies.

This short documentary delves into the remarkable efforts of UN Women’s Safe Cities project in Papua New Guinea. The film showcases their mission to establish a safer public environment for women and girls. The documentary highlights the urgent need for attention in Port Moresby’s public markets. Through market footage, interviews with diverse stakeholders including vendors, UN officials, political figures, and the general public, the film provides a comprehensive portrayal of the challenges and dangers faced by women in Port Moresby. The documentary effectively underscores the significance of the Safe Cities project and its impact on improving lives. Safe cities 1 was very well received, gaining over 200,000 views on Youtube and provided funding to support the contiuation of the program.

  • Conducted interviews with market vendors, UN and government officials. 
  • Edited the documentary.
  • Conducted research and gathered additional digital assets for the enhancement of visuals for the documentary.
  • Collaborated closely with UN staff throughout the documentary production process.
  • Designed and authored DVDs for the distribution of the documentary.

The second installment of the Safe Cities documentary series delves into the transformative journey of the Gerehu Market reconstruction. With a primary focus on the efforts of the Safe Cities project team, the film showcases their direct influence on the market vendors. Through a thoughtful examination of hygiene conditions before and after the construction, as well as an exploration of safety and violence issues, the documentary illustrates the tremendous impact this project has made. While highlighting the significant progress achieved, the film also sheds light on the lingering challenges that demand further attention. 

My tasks throughout the project included:

  • Developed a comprehensive proposal for the documentary, including details such as the filming schedule, budget, locations, and desired participants for interviews.
  • Coordinated international and domestic travel arrangements for myself and the rest of the crew in collaboration with the In-Country office in Papua New Guinea.
  • Created an outline for the documentary, structuring it in a way that aligned with the project’s objectives.
  • Worked as camera operator for the entire documentary.
  • Conducted interviews with market vendors, UN and government officials.
  • Edited the documentary and worked on colour grading, and subtitling.
  • Scripted narration and voice over, and hired and coordinater external voice over narrator. 
  • Conducted research and gathered additional digital assets for the enhancement of visuals for the documentary.
  • Collaborated closely with UN staff throughout the documentary production process.
  • Designed and authored DVDs for the distribution of the documentary.
